Rose,
Dave Popejoy, one of our '60 classmates, is highlighted in "From Pages Past" in today's Pantagraph.
Here's the blurb, compiled by Roger Cushman.
"50 Years ago (1959) Dave Popejoy pitched a two-hitter for a 3-1 victory and homered in both games as
Bloomington's Louis E. Davis Post split a doubleheader with Canton's Junior Legion baseball team. Canton
won the second game, 6-3."
Most of us remember what an outstanding baseball player Dave was, and an all-around athlete as well.

Hi Rose, two of our '60 classmates are featured in today's Pantagraph in the "From Pages Past" section, compiled by Roger Cushman. Here goes:
"50 years ago (June 21, 1959) Dave Dollins won his second straight junior division title by beating Ron Pointer, 6-1, 6-1 in the Bloomington-Normal Jaycee Junior Tennis Tournament finals. Dollins also paired with Bill Zook to win the doubles crown."
As far as I know, Dave is still an accomplished player out in California.

Rose, on this date in 1959, our classmate Larry Woosley had a big day in the Intercity vs. Area
Pantagraph all-star baseball game.
Most of us remember what a terrific athlete Larry was.
From today's Pantagraph, compiled by Roger Cushman: "50 years ago: Larry Woosley's grand slam
home run in the fourth inning led the Intercity to a 15-10 decision over the Area in the Pantagraph
All-Star baseball game at McCormick Field. Woosley, a BHS athlete, also was the winning pitcher."
way go go, ta-Woos.

Hi Rose,
It saddens me to report that another classmate has died. Yesterday evening (June 8, 2009) Harry (Bud) Kelly passed away. The obit should be in tomorrows Pantagraph. I plan on going to the visitation. We were not close but I saw him often the last few years at the Eagles club where we were both active members. Add his name to the list we hate to see grow.

Received email from Phil Baer's wife with this message and several photos of Phil's work. Check out the photos in our Photo Gallery.
These are painted wood sculptures, oil paint on redwood, some are 8 foot by 6 foot.
Some are installed on roof peaks--on the eves.
When installed on each eve of a building they create the effect he wants.
Some are installed as entryways to gardens.
Phil Baer calls this series "Drakes" and the seven seen here are named as follows:
Drake I, Drake II, Drake III, Drake IV, Drake V, Drake VI, Drake VII

My USTA's Super Senior tennis team at the National tournament in Surprise, Arizona. We didn't win but we had a very good time and we played well (although not well enough to win!!) We were thrilled just to get there.

Hi Rose, here's another snippet from the sports section of the Pantagraph, in the "From Pages Past" feature: two of our '60 classmates are highlighted. Jim B.
"50 years ago (1959) Bloomington lengthened its winning streak to six games with an 8-1 baseball victory over University High. LARRY WOOSLEY started for the Purple Raiders and limited the Pioneers to two hits--one an infield tap--in his five-inning stint and DAVE POPEJOY worked the final two frames."
April 24, 2009
Rose, here's a tidbit from today's Pantagraph in the "From Pages Past" section:
"50 years ago (1959), Red-haired Dave Popejoy, embittered over a called third strike earlier in the game, lashed out two home runs--one with the bases loaded--to lead BHS to a 7-3 come-from-behind baseball victory over Trinity."
The called third strike mention is kind of weird, but there you have it. As for the two homers, we can rest assured they were struck with a good old wooden bat, not the metal crud they use these days.

Rodney Sakemiller, our classmate, died March 6 in California. His family has descended on B-N this week to visit his mother Ruth (still going strong at age 92) and sister Sondra. The family will all be attending a memorial service for Rodney on Thursday (April 9). It will be a private service for family only.
Rodney had spent the last 35 years or so in the Antelope Valley area of CA on the high desert. All of us who knew and loved him will miss our friend.

Hi Rose,
I'm glad you are doing the website for our class reunion. Thanks for your work on this.
You have my permission to put anything on the website about me from the high school alumni website or notes I sent my old classmates that I told them they could give you.
My family's website is www.arthousesite.com
My wife & I are having lunch with Dave & Susan Jones of BHS'60 next week. They live about 40 miles from us.
Do you have a way of getting in touch with Dave Dollins?
Let's keep in touch.
Phil
(I & my wife and kids legally changed the spelling of our last name from Bare to Baer, but it is still us.)

Hello Phil, I don’t have any details on the exact date of our reunion as yet so keep an eye on the class website; I sure hope you can work something out when the date is set. I knew Richard Pryor before he became famous because he had an aunt that I knew who lived in Bloomington. Richard use to come to stay with her and we would hang out together in the summertime. There is a good possibility you may have had him as an opponent because he was about our age; I never knew him to be a wrestler but I knew him way before we were in high school and then lost track. Always good to hear from you so stay in touch, take care,
Bebop

Robert- Don't know about the Reunion. Its a long way and we have a large family for whom we provide a certain amount of help with the grandchildren, etc. When is it, Fall of this year or 2010? We would like to make it and will try. Here's a question you might be able to answer. We saw a documentary about Richard Pryor, the comedian, which said that he was from Peoria and wrestled in High School. I remember wrestling a black guy from Peoria in, I think, late 1958. Is there any chance that was him?

Feb. 26,2009
Robert, Thanks for the 9-11 pictures. My wife lost old high school friends there and she and I lived for six years in the Soho very near to there. At one point, we had almost arranged an art exhibit in the huge ground-floor of one of the Towers. You're a military guy, right? Thank you for your service to our Country. We are among the Conservative minority in this very liberal place, frequently getting into it with the local "Progessives" about the size and scope of government, their lax law enforcement, etc. Anyway, thanks again for those moving photos.

Worth checking out?....
This website is not officially connected with BHS but has limited BHS60 info at this time. To get full access to the site they want a one time $20 donation. You do NOT have to give them any money. I didn't. You can still access some of your class mates' info at no cost. At this point, those signed up are Bob Gaston, Cindy Greene, Phil Bare, Jeff Christiana and myself. We have our own website but you may want to look into this one too - although there isn't much there.
Another way to get to this website is thru BHS's official website -

Sad times for 2 classmates that are country neighbors.
Linda Roberts Messer lost her Dad and Rose Nelson Robeson lost her Mom in December.
Linda & Rose live on the same road so can be considered neighbors when it comes to living in the country.
