Lynn G. Raney, 75, died Thursday (Dec. 28, 2017) at his home in Springfield.

Lynn was born on July 3, 1942, in Joliet to V. Earl and Marguerite Raney. He grew up in Bloomington and after graduating from Bloomington High School, he attended Illinois State University where he received his degree in art education. He met his wife, Marilyn, at church and they were married in 1973. Lynn was a proud father of two children.

Lynn enjoyed a long, dedicated career working for the State of Illinois, where he specialized in advance and logistics and coordinated various ceremonies and events. He was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church in Springfield. He enjoyed participating in, and later volunteering for, the Boy Scouts of America, and achieved the honors of Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver, and the Wood badge. A uniquely talented artist, Lynn had a special gift for cartoons, caricatures, and logo designs. His annual hand-drawn Christmas card spread holiday joy each year. His flair for festive and holiday-themed attire brought a smile to all those around him.

He was preceded in death by his son, Brian, and his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Marilyn (Merrill) Raney; his daughter, Lynette Nelson (Ryan); his sister, Joy Franks (Cary); his two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, Springfield. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, Springfield, with Pastor Mike Whitaker officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, Springfield, or the Abraham Lincoln Council Boy Scouts of America.
