SPRINGFIELD — William M. “Bill” Hanner, 72, of Springfield, passed away Tuesday (March 10, 2015) at his home.
He was born March 14, 1942, in Bloomington, the son of Herbert and Helen Hilsabeck Hanner. After graduation from Bloomington High School, Bill continued his education at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, where he earned his bachelor of arts in marketing. He was a member of the Theta XI fraternity.

Bill served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968. After returning home, Bill began his career in 1968 with the State of Illinois, Secretary of State Securities Division. He retired in 2002 after 34 years of service as a securities examiner.

He married Barbara Fenton on Aug. 23, 1969, at Concordia Lutheran Church, Springfield, and she survives.

Also surviving are his two sons, Matthew “Matt” (Kim) Hanner, Chatham, and Michael “Mike” (Brandy) Hanner, St. Charles, Mo.; four grandchildren, Hunter and Brenna Hickman and Kipton and Addison Hanner; an aunt, Pauline Hanner, Normal; an uncle, Marvin Hanner, Flint, Mich.; one niece; two nephews; several cousins; and many friends.

Bill was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church LCMS, where he served as an usher and played on the dart ball team. He served as president of the Central Illinois District of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod dart ball league for many years. He was an active member of the National Association of Securities Administrators, attending many of its functions throughout his professional career.

Nothing was as important to Bill as his family. He and Barb attended all of their sons' activities growing up and into the college and adult years. As they married and now with their families, Bill found great joy spending time with them and his grandchildren. Summer family vacations to the Ozarks and later wintering in Alabama for many years became traditions for the Hanners.

He was a friend to all who knew him and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

The Hanner family will greet friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Bisch Funeral Home, West 2931 S. Koke Mill Road, Springfield, Ill.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 2645 Old Jacksonville Road, Springfield, with the Rev. Joshua T. Traxel officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park, near Riverton.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may direct memorial contributions to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and School, 3645 Old Jacksonville Road, Springfield, IL 62704 or Lutheran High School, 3500 W. Washington, Springfield, IL 62704.
